Halloween is a day that many kids look forward to. With all of the costumes and candy, there is so much excitement! However, those with braces will need to take some extra care to protect their smiles. At Unionville Orthodontics, we have a few tips to share with you!
Remind Kids What They Can Eat
Most children love to eat sweets and candies. It’s important for kids with braces to sort their candy before they dig in. The reason is that some types of hard or sticky candies can get stuck in their braces or harm their appliance. Remind them that they can enjoy soft chocolates, cookies, jello and potato chips. They should avoid gummies, chocolates with caramel or nuts and no hard candy.
Those patients who are undergoing Invisalign treatment do not have to restrict their candy. However, it is important for them to wear their aligners for as long as possible on Halloween, and remove them when eating. Place them back in once they have brushed and flossed.
Oral Care is A Must
After enjoying a fun night of trick-or-treating (and indulging) – it’s time to brush and floss. Make sure they brush as soon as possible to remove any lingering candy hanging out in their braces. A thorough cleaning is important for their orthodontic treatment to stay on track! If your child has any loose brackets or wires, contact us for help!
We wish you and your family a safe and Happy Halloween!
